There is nothing more romantic than the first look. Your eyes lock, your heart swells and a heady dose of love washes over you. In a moment so powerful, the last thing on your mind is superstition. And for good reason. The tradition of not seeing a bride in her dress before the ceremony actually comes from a time when arranged marriages were the norm. This separation insured that neither the bride or groom would have the opportunity to change their minds. Now, don’t get us wrong. We LOVE that moment when the groom sees his bride walking down the aisle for the first time. But we also can’t get enough of the “first look” trend.
So if you’re curious about planning a first look with your guy, but are still a little nervous – have no fear. There are so many fun ways to pull off a first look that you can even do so without breaking that age old tradition. How, you ask? Check out our favorite ways brides have customized this special moment below!
First Touch
If you’re a stickler for tradition, this is the option for you! Have a “first touch” with your groom by holding hands around a door frame right before the ceremony. Share a prayer, a hand squeeze, or simply be there in the moment together. Your photographer will have a perfect shot of the both of you, without either of you ever having to see the other.
Love Letters
It’s no secret that we adore a handwritten love note. Not only are they incredibly romantic, but they become a treasured keepsake for years to come. Write each other a letter to be opened before the ceremony and include all of the reasons you can’t wait to marry him. (Need help with this? Check out our blog post here). The best part about this option? You can choose to open them together, or apart! Include them with the “first touch” above and read them while standing back to back. Or simply take a moment to read it yourself before you meet him at the other end of the aisle.
For Her Eyes Only
So you want to see him, but don’t want him to see you? Break out the blindfold! No wedding curse can fall upon you for this loophole, we promise. Take it a step further and surprise him by removing it yourself! He won’t be expecting to get to see you at all so his reaction will be so sweet and genuine.

The First Look
If none of the above work for you, it’s time to go all in! Choose a special, private place at your venue to meet each other before the ceremony. (Make sure your photographer is invited!) And don’t be worried that this will downplay his excitement to see you walking down the aisle later – that moment has a magic all of its own.
Pro Tip: If you’re planning a first look, consider taking your portraits right after. This way you can go right from the ceremony to the cocktail hour without leaving your guests.

And whichever tradition you make your own – Marrygrams cards make the perfect keepsake for those moments you’ll want to remember forever.
